Officially opening to the public at 1:30pm, thousands of people are expected to make the journey over the bridge. This also coincides with Sunderland AFC’s home game against Wolves.
Live entertainment is being provided at Keel Square from 12pm. Archive SAFC footage will be screened on the Expo Pavillion and a meet and greet with former players is also taking place. At 2pm, an SAFC fan parade – led by This Is Wearside – will depart from Keel Square and will continue over the Keel Crossing to Sheepfolds Stables and the Stadium of Light.
The new city icon creates a direct pedestrian and cycle route from the heart of the city to venues like Sheepfolds Stables, enabling people from both the north/south of the city to easily make their way across the river to enjoy a growing number of hospitality, leisure, retail and commercial venues that have opened in recent years. It’s a significant moment for Sunderland and a spectacular symbol of the city’s transformation and ambition.

Keel Crossing is 10 metres wide, spans 250 metres and stands at a height of 30 metres above the river. It is adajacent to Wearmouth Bridge which was built in 1927 to support the growing volume of traffic moving through the city.
